A new baby is a big life change and it is common to have different emotions after delivery. While 1 in 5 women will experience postpartum depression, most never receive the care they need.

The symptoms of postpartum depression usually appear within the first few weeks or months after childbirth, but they can occur at any time in the first postpartum year. These can include:
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Feeling sad and tearful
  • A loss of interest or pleasure
  • Anxiety or excessive worry
  • Having trouble concentrating
  • Feeling hopeless, frustrated, or angry
  • Having difficulties connecting with the baby
McMaster University and the Women's Health Concerns Clinic at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton have partnered with organizations across Ontario to study non-medication treatments for postpartum depression. Learn more about a study happening near you:
